UnRAID Server - Personal Project
UnRAID Server - Personal Project
Since about the begining of the year, I have lashed together this random assortment(s) of parts and put together a small home server for me and my girlfriend. The end goal was to have the following funtions
Secure photo backup from mobile with a web client
Automatic ripping of DVDs and Blu-ray discs
Media management for multiple formats (TV, Movies, Music)
A backup to the cloud incase of critical system faliure
In the end, I have achieved mostly this - minus the blu-ray ripping as I am yet to find a reasonably prices blu-ray drive for my server.
My system consists of the following specifications:
Case: Fractal Node R4 with extra HDD bays
Motherboard: Gigabyte Z270P-D3-CF
CPU: Intel Core i7-6700
Memory: 16 GiB DDR4
9TB of total disk space
I have an UnRAID Plus license, which was recently renamed from the looks of it. Not sure what its called now. I personally chose UnRAID down to these 3 reasons
Ease of use: Its piss easy. Good web ui - everything is user serviceable
Support: The support on the forums is next to none
Functionality: Everything seems to just work. I like that.
This build has sent me back around £200. This includes the UnRAID license. Most the parts and drive(s) came from e-waste. Ill try to reuse as much as possible. It runs reletively quite thanks to the sound dampening in the case. Part of the reason I even chose this case to begin with. Its in my room, so the little noise - the better.
Apps I ended up using to meet my needs:
Immich - A google photos alternative, simply fantastic.
LubeLogger - Excellent for logging my car bits and bobs
Plex - Does it really need an intro? Its fantastic.
MegaSync - This is my offsite, yeah its not Backblaze or whatever, but it works.
Ripper - Rips my DVDs and bungs them in a folder, just what I wanted.
Just wanted to share one of my favorite hobbies. I tinker with this everyday. Its my own little baby, and I really do look after it.
